BOOTLEGGER'S BAY
This naturally formed beach is found on the shores of Lake Huron. It is located on Hwy. 538 in Algoma Mills and offers visitors
and residents a place to come, relax and soak up the sun's rays. It is a
perfect place to have a picnic and spend the day on a peaceful beach nestled
along the shore. The clear water of Lake Huron invitingly awaits the
swimming enthusiasts during those hot days of summer to offer refreshing
relief. It can also be a fantastic place to quietly sit and watch the beauty of the
sun setting across the great lake.
Bootlegger's Bay originally got its name way back in 1920 and for good
reasons.
During the days of prohibition, when Algoma Mills was a booming port for the many ships
travelling through the North Channel, it was in this infamous little bay that some
ships would dump good cases of liquor. They did this to evade the revenue watchers that were at the main docks. To this day the
bay has kept its name and has been an amusing tale to tell about our historic past.
